F A Q
What is scabies?
Scabies is a contagious skin disease cause by a mite called Sarcoptes Scabiei. The scabies mite is about 0.4mm x 0.3mm, which is just visible to the naked eye. The mites mate on the surface of the skin and then the female mite burrows into the skins epidermal (upper) layer, leaving eggs and faecal pellets in the burrow behind her. The intense itch, which is characteristic of scabies, is caused by an allergic reaction to the mites, their droppings and their dead bodies. In the first scabies infection, the itch may take 4 to 6 weeks to develop. In any subsequent infection, the itch will develop within 12 to 24 hours. The itch usually occurs on the hands, arms, legs, inner thighs and around the waist. The mites themselves are found on and between the fingers and toes, on the wrists, feet, ankles, elbows, knees, armpits, genitals and buttocks. In women, the breasts may also be affected. In adults, the head and face are rarely affected but scabies can affect the head and face of infants under 2 years old. The other sign of a scabies infection is the raised wavy tracks made by the mites as they burrow through the skin.
How does someone get scabies?
Scabies is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. This happens most frequently on the commonest of contacts such as holding hands. It is easily passed between family members and partners sharing the same bed or through intimate personal contact.
Will the itch go immediately after treatment?
After treatment the itch may remain for 1 to 2 weeks until all the dead mites have been rubbed off along with the outer layers of skin. In the meantime, the itching can be relieved by using Calamine Lotion or anti-histamine tablets or syrup.
Do I need to boil-wash all my nightclothes, underwear and bed linen after treatment?
It is not necessary to boil/wash underwear, nightwear or bed linen. Normal washing procedure is sufficient for these items after treatment.
