Free RSV vaccines coming for older Australians: what you need to know

The Australian Government has announced that RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccines will soon be available for free to older Australians under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). This change is aimed at protecting people most at risk from RSV, a common virus that can become serious, especially during winter. Health Minister Mark Butler encouraged people to take advantage of the program, saying Australians should protect themselves and their community by getting vaccinated ahead of winter. Here’s what this means for you and your family.

Who can get the free RSV vaccine?
You are eligible if you are aged 75 years or older, or if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and aged 60 years or older. Older adults are more likely to become seriously unwell from RSV, particularly those living in aged care where exposure to infections is higher.

When will it be available?
The free RSV vaccine will be available from 15 May 2026. You will be able to get vaccinated at your local pharmacy, GP clinic, or Aboriginal Health Service. While the vaccine can be given at any time, it’s best to have it before winter, when RSV cases usually increase.

What is RSV?
RSV is a virus that affects the lungs and airways. It spreads easily and can cause symptoms like coughing, fever, and breathing difficulties. For many people it feels like a cold, but in older adults it can lead to more serious illness and complications.

Do you need more than one dose?
At the moment, only one dose is recommended. Current evidence suggests the vaccine may provide protection for several years, although this will continue to be monitored over time.

Which vaccine will be used?
The vaccine being provided under this program is called Arexvy. It has been approved in Australia for use in older adults.

Why is it being funded now?
The decision follows expert advice that RSV poses a real risk to older Australians. The vaccine has been shown to reduce serious illness, and recent pricing changes have made it possible to offer it more widely through the national program.

What should you do next?
If you or someone you care for is eligible, it’s a good idea to speak with your pharmacist or GP and plan to get vaccinated once it becomes available in mid-May. You can also contact your local Your Discount Chemist to check availability and book an appointment.
